Panchangam is a Hindu astrological almanac that follows traditional units of timekeeping. It provides essential daily astronomical data including Tithi (lunar day), Vaara (weekday), Nakshatra (constellation), Yoga, and Karana. It is highly valued for finding auspicious timings (Muhurtham) for events and rituals.

Telugu festivals are calculated based on the lunar-solar calendar (Chandra Mana). The exact dates are determined by the specific combination of the Moon's phase (Tithi) and the ruling star (Nakshatra) occurring at sunrise, which is why they shift slightly every year in the standard calendar.

The Amavasyant calendar, widely followed in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, concludes its lunar month on Amavasya (new moon day). Conversely, the Purnimant calendar, which is heavily utilized in North India, ends its lunar month on Purnima (full moon day).

The English (Gregorian) calendar is solar, whereas the Telugu calendar is lunar-solar. A lunar year is approximately 354 days long, which is 11 days shorter than the solar year. To synchronize the lunar months with the solar seasons, an extra month known as "Adhika Masa" is periodically added, causing English festival dates to shift.
